Robert, Kristen and Taylor: Life after Twilight

The pressure is on for the Twilight trio.

After reaching ear-piercing success with the Twilight Saga, the trio of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are now pressured to rise above their Twilight fame and prove that they have the sustainability in Hollywood. Whist Kristen has her independent films credit, her male counterparts are still yet to prove themselves. Taylor was part of the all-star cast ensemble of Valentines Day but his true star power will be tested in a series of upcoming action films such as Abductions and Stretch Armstrong.

In Lautner’s case, reviewers seem to have been more enthusiastic about his musculature than his acting chops. That makes the more physical roles that he’s pursuing a sensible fit. They may not expand his range, but they’re sure to be explosion heavy and have the potential to be major hits.

Added to that, the high-octane action films could broaden his audience beyond young girls and into the teenage boy and young male terrain.

Lautner, who had a bit part in the recent “Valentine’s Day” rom-com, will play a college student trying to save his friends from a drug cartel in “Cancun,” the lead in the spy-thriller “Abducted” and will top line the superhero movies “Max Steel” and “Stretch Armstrong.”

He just dropped out of “Northern Lights,” directed by “Max Payne’s” John Moore and which was rumored to star Tom Cruise.

Pattinson on the other hand is out to prove his acting chops. He is set to appear in Remember Me, a romatic drama set in New York City. He is also three period films lining up namely Bel Ami, Unbound Captives and Water for Elephants. He is out to prove that he is more than just a handsome face.

If the trailer for “Remember Me” is any indication, the romantic drama will feature plenty of Pattinson’s trademarked lovelorn brooding. For Pattinson’s post-”Twilight” success, of course, it helps if the movie is a hit, and at least one box-office tracker thinks that should be the case.

“It’s about double the interest levels of any of the films opening that weekend,” John Singh of tracking site Flixster told TheWrap. “Its biggest audience is that under-25 female group, and we’ve seen with movies such as ‘Twilight’ and ‘Dear John’ that this demographic can absolutely open a movie.”

“After ‘Star Wars,’ Harrison Ford did a movie called ‘Hanover Street,’ which bombed,” Singh said. “Audiences didn’t want him as a romantic lead — they wanted him to reprise the lovable rogue he’d played before.”

“With these franchises, the appeal of the character doesn’t necessarily indicate the appeal of the actor, so it’s reliant on the actor to choose the right roles that won’t alienate audiences,” Flixter’s Singh told TheWrap.

Of the three, its Kristen that is predicted as the one to succeed. She already has a credible independent background and continues to explore her acting abilities with every movie she is going to make.

Hence Stewart’s approach. She’s taking on interesting roles, such as the iconic Jett and “Rileys” troubled prostitute — but they retain the flinty core that made her Bella a role model to teenage girls.

Stewart was all over Sundance last month in a pair of indie films, the Joan Jett biopic “The Runaways” and the well-received family drama “Welcome to the Rileys.”In the process, she has been building on her pre-”Twilight” predilection for smaller flms with well-established, critically lauded actors and directors, such as “Adventureland” and “Into the Wild.”

She will also appear in “The Yellow Handkerchief” with William Hurt and Maria Bello; the film about a group of strangers traveling through post-Katrina Louisiana gets a limited release next week.

The Twilight Trio: Banking on their success?

With huge drawing power and a brighter-than-ever star status in Hollywood, many industry insiders are looking at the three Twilight leads composed of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. They have been pressure on them to succeed post-Twilight and things are not going to get easy.

“Being associated with one thing for so long can be detrimental,” says Paul Dergarabedian, box-office tracker for Hollywood.com

“Look at Anna Kendrick,” Dergarabedian says, referring to the actress who plays Stewart’s friend in the Twilight films. “She earned instant credibility after working with George Clooney and director Jason Reitman in Up in the Air. Now she’s Oscar-nominated.”

All of the three actors are releasing movie projects a few weeks/days from each other. Taylor appeared in Valentines Day whilst Rob and Kris are releasing Remember Me and The Runaways a few days from now. But according to their respective directors, it’s not Twilight that draw them to the actors but their talent and dedication.

According to director Garry Marshall,

“I’m about 107,” says the director, 75. “I don’t know who is popping. I saw he could jump around and that his shirt was never on, which we turned into a joke. Who could guess he was a fine actor?”

“He gets the biggest yell-out during the opening titles,” says Marshall, who wisely padded Lautner’s part after noticing his flair for comedy — as well as after hearing the screams of the hundred or so fans on the film’s high school set. “He’s a sweet kid, unspoiled by Hollywood so far.”

“He has the presence and the firm jaw to lead an action film,” he says. “He can say, ‘Yo, secure the perimeter.’ I didn’t whisper ‘Chekov’ in his ear. I said, ‘You can go run and save people.’ “

Director Allan Coulter on Rob:

“If I had seen Twilight,” he says, “I might not have hired him. He is so limited by the kinds of traits he has to express. It’s not that psychologically complex. I hope the rabid interest in Rob as a personality helps the box office. It would be foolish to say otherwise.”

Director Flora Sigismondi on Kristen:

“Joan is far more physical, and Kristen invested that energy in her acting. This is punk rock and primal. She walked differently, acted differently. Her body changed. It was, ‘Where is Kristen?’ “

Kristen and Taylor to present at the Oscars

Last year, it was Robert’s time to attend. For this year’s Oscars. Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will attend the annual awards gala.

Kristen confirmed this news to Marc Malkin of E!Online during her press tour for her new movie, The Yellow Handkerchief. She will be joined by co-star Taylor Lautner, where they will act as presenters for the night.

“Yeah, I’m going,” Stewart just told me when I asked if we’d be seeing her on March 7 at the Academy Awards. “Me and Taylor are going to present.”

“I’ve been looking at shoes,” she said. “I’m trying to pick shoes that I know I won’t fall down in.”

She also talked about her being nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award ,and reveals who she thinks would win and what she would do if she will win the award.

“I feel so funny about it,” Stewart says. “Really cool people have won and really cool people are up for it this year. And I know a few of them, like Jesse [Eisenberg] and Carey [Mulligan].”

Stewart thinks it’s Rahim’s award to win.

“I can’t even actually think about that,” she says, covering her face. “If I win, I’m gonna be like, ‘Carey, Jesse, suck it up—’cause I think Tahar should have won.”
