The hit franchise of Twilight

With the success of New Moon, the Twilight Saga has proven itself that it’s more than just about a cultural phenomenon. It has proven that despite being backed by a female fanbase, it can still make an impact at the box-office and has broken the stereo-type character of fanboys driving up a movie to box-office success.

Twilight has reinvigorated a movie industry, who for the past few years has been battling piracy and low-audience turnout. It has also proven again that women and female audience are also a lucrative market.

“What’s refreshing is that it has not just drawn the usual audience of horror fans, but also appealed to a teenage girl sensibility. It has managed to draw much more widespread acknowledgement,” said Ali Jaafar, the international editor of Variety in London. “The first in the series was big but this second one has built its success on new fans.”

Before New Moon is even released, it has broken pre-sales records which led to its record-breaking release.

Setting the box-office showing in context, Tim Richards, chief executive of Vue Entertainment cinemas, one of the UK’s largest commercial chains, said simply: “These were the largest attended midnight shows we have ever done. We were adding extra shows right up to the last moment to cope with the demand.”

Fans will certainly be lining up as the third installment in the franchise will be served up next summer. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be released on June 30, 2010.
