New Moon box-office update #3

Summit Entertainment has announced Sunday morning that New Moon opened to a phenomenal $140.7M weekend. This already includes the record breaking $26.3M midnight opening earnings and the $72.7M opening/single day record. New Moon also earned $118.1 M from 25 international markets for a 5-day total sales of $258. 8M. These numbers may change come Monday morning when Sunday actuals will come in.

With this phenomenal performance, New Moon has shattered records along the way and has exceeded beyond Hollywood’s expectations. Here is a list of records that New Moon has re-established:

  • A week before its release, New Moon has topped theĀ  list of Top 10All-Time Advance Ticket sellers in Fandango and Movie Tickets. They have also recorded the Top 10All-Time Advance Ticket sellers in the UK.
  • New Moon shatters the Midnight Showings record held before by Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince when it recorded a total midnight earnings of $26.3M
  • New Moon then went on to shatter the all -time domestic high forĀ  Friday and opening day record held by The Dark Knight, when it recorded a single day earnings of $72.7M.
  • With the $140.7 M weekend, New Moon entered the All-Time Biggest Opening Weekend record, placing third behind The Dark Knight (first place) and Spiderman 3 (second). It unseated Pirates of the Caribbean 2 to fourth place.
  • New Moon is the only movie in the All-Time Biggest Opening Weekend list to have been released in the Holiday season. All the rest of the movies on the list were released during the summer season, Hollywood’s busiest time.
  • New Moon also recorded the Biggest Non-Summer 3-Day (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) Weekend Opening ever.
  • New Moon is the biggest November Opening in History surpassing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s $102.7M.
  • New Moon also smashed the record for the Biggest 2-day Total to reach $100+M with $115.9M, passing The Dark Knight’s 2-Day record of $114.8M.
  • With the boost of New Moon, Hollywood has its second-biggest non-holiday weekend ever, coming in slightly behind the $260M rung up over the weekend of July 18, 2008 when The Dark Knight opened.

Update: Internationally, New Moon also debuts at No.1 with an estimated $118.1 million from 6, 681 screens in 25 territories. The film notched up an astronomical $17,677 per-screen average over-all. New Moon set opening records in Australia and New Zealand which are the first two countries to see the film.

Over in Europe, New Moon dominated the UK with $18.7M from 499 locations. Italy, France and Spain also posted strong openings with $13M, $17M and $13.7M respectively.
