Has New Moon destroyed the werewolves lore?

Everybody wants to pick on Twilight it seems.

Last year, Twilight was accused of destroying the vampire lore when author Stephenie Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke decided to sex-up their vampires, allowing them to sparkle in the sun and be gentle with humans – thereby “destroying” the usual vampire lore of being gory and dead creatures of night.

This year, its the turn of the werewolves. With the big yet fuzzy werewolves from New Moon hitting the big screen in the coming weeks, some movie pundits and werewolves enthusiasts are complaining that once again, the Twilight Saga has somehow degraded another supernatural lore.

In an article by The Guardian UK, author Ben Child dissects the fuzzy and huge werewolves in New Moon, which somehow destroyed the magic of its transformation. Yes, the CGI was better compared to Twilight but the werewolves seemed to transform in a “pop”, which destroys the slow yet fearful transformation. Here is an excerpt of his article:

So why am I bothered? Well the thing is, werewolves on celluloid have something of a history, and it’s a proud one. Rick Baker’s spectacular work on An American Werewolf in London won him an Oscar for best make up in 1982, setting a standard that would never be beaten. Admittedly many of its followers, The Howling, the god awful Underworld films and other abominably poor efforts such as 1996′s Bad Moon, were rather less successful. But at least they made an effort. New Moon‘s equivalent is a complete cop-out by way of comparison.

Furthermore, the werewolves look like they’re ready to leap up, lick your hand, and let you take them for a nice walk. If I saw one at the local dog pound, I would at this very moment be the proud owner of my very own werewolf, so adorable are they. Now I know these films are intended to be teen movies, rather than horror films, but surely any series which features lyncanthropes and bloodsucking denizens of the undead ought to be capable of instilling at least a modicum of fear into its audience. Otherwise, where’s the suspense?

What do you think Twilighters? Has Twilight completely destroyed the werewolf transformation?

  1. Wolf Larente says:

Twilight is not ruining the werewolf lore if you are refering to Jacob black and his pack they are shape shifters not werewolves they explain that in Breaking Dawn

  2. nick dialfredi says:

I think it’s better than the same old traditional werewolf theme.

  3. I agree with both of you two.Yes they do explain that in Breaking Dawn. But there ‘Shapeshifters”.But Which book do you like better?wHICH mOVIE ALSO?

  4. Shapeshifter or werewolf everyone knows if that animal went bump in the night no one whould be sleeping peacfully. The new moon version of the werewolves/shapeshifters is very go based on the size and the beauty of the fights they have. To the critics go look in the mirrior there’s a lot u could say from there.

  5. hottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  6. I think they’re just over reacting because new moon did an awesome job and that is coming from a werewolf lover here people. New Moon didn’t do anything wrong here so I suggest they stop trying to find the flaws and shut up and admit they were wrong.
